What is love?

Love is a combination of friendship and time. It has nothing to do with the physical attributes of a person, that is lust.

What is the difference between platonic love and love for your partner? Love for your partner includes a physical attraction.

When you grow old you no longer fit into the societies attractive bracket. The physical attraction element of your relationship is gone. Are you therefore no longer in love with your partner. No, because the physical element to the relationship doesn't matter as much at the mental bit of it. Back to my original question, "what is the difference between platonic love and love for you partner?".

There cannot be such a thing as love at first sight, as you cannot see someone's mind. It should be called "lust at first sight".

The euro is a bad thing - to be done

The euro encourages trade between countries. Trade results in countries becoming less self-suficient...

You have no reason to be angry

Compared to all of the problems in the world your problems are insignificant. So before getting angry about anything pause for a moment and think, "if I'm going to get angry about something I'll get angry about all of the unnecessy killing, pollution, and general injustice in the world. Only when all of these problems have been resolved will I get angry about any of my insignificant problems".

Public owned or private services?

Introducing competition brings price down. What does it do to the quality of service or product?

A private companies goal is to make money for the shareholders. This must result in a drop in quality.

As with most things we probably want a mixture. Privately run services with some public money.

To apologize or not

To apologize is to let yourself off of the hook and make yourself feel better. To apologize is therefore a very selfish act. If you acted out of order towards another person then they will have realized this. Knowing this, should you apologize? An apology may make the receiver feel better but this is only because they lack the confidence to realize that they were right all along ie. it re-enforces/confirms their postition

Whats the point in booze?

As far a I can see the only valid reasons are:
You enjoy the taste (no-one enjoys their first pint).
You enjoy the affect (is it worth the hangover).
To expand your mind/make you think differently (Clouds your judgement slows thought down thought).
Drink to escape.

Iraq as a Flytrap - abridged artical by Andrew Sullivan from the Times

Talking about the American soldiers in Iraq, "if the terrorists leave us alone in Iraq, fine he said. But if they come and get us, even better. Far more advantageous to fight terror using trained soldiers in Iraq than trying to defend civilians in New York or London". "Think of it as a flytrap".

Capitalism and Shifting to a Post Growth Economy - abridged from a Times article by David Smith about Clive Hamiltons views

Capitalism works by identifying and satisfying needs. By making us want to buy more as consumers, capitalism produces a neat loop wich generates the demand to keep us in jobs as workers.

The overwhelming majority of people in the rich countries have now passed the point where additional material wealth gives them any benefit at all.

We should therefore go post-growth or at least aim for a lower rate of expansion.

Would there not be massive unemployment in a post-growth society? He argues not, because we would all work fewer hours, improving the national work-life balance. In practice it would be alot more complicated and painful than that. The poor without the tax revenue generated by the growth in spending by the rich, would be even poorer.

Homosexuality - to be done

Does enjoying masterbation mean that you are homosexual?

What is the difference between you having a five knuckle shuffle and thinking of a woman and another man fighting your purple headed monster and you thinking of a woman?

Is everyone homosexual, but most people haven't found someone of the same sex that they fancy?

Falling in love with someone because of their appearance is shallow and foolish because their appearance will change. If you take appearance of of the equation, then you are just left with personalities. Although specific personalities are different there is no fundamental difference between the personality of a man and a woman. Therefore if you take appearance out of the equation you are just as likely to fall in love with a man as to fall in love with a woman.

There is more truth and honesty in visiting a strip club than in most other aspects of life - to be done.

Is it wrong to stare at a beautiful picture?

What is the difference between looking at a picture of a naked woman, and looking at a naked woman in a strip club?

When is looking at a naked woman art and when is it not art?

By looking at something you are treating it as an object.

Physicaly, people are objects.

Are the women working in strip clubs being exploited or are they exploiting the people that go there?

When one of your beliefs conflicts with another things get tricky. For example I'm a vegetarian and I also think that waste is bad. If a chicken has been killed, if your only choices are to eat the chicken or throw it away, which of your beliefs takes priority? Do you waste the chicken by throwing it away or do you stop being vegetarian and eat it so as not to waste it? - Expand on this.

Cars

By choosing to drive, you are choosing to put yourself in a position where compared to walking, cycling and using public transport, you are X times more likely to kill or injure someone directly. And you are killing people indirectly through pollution and damage to the environment.

"Over 1.2m people are killed in road traffic accidents around the world each year, according to a report." 1

"Figures from the World Health Organization and the World Bank suggest another 50m people may be left injured by crashes annually." 1

"The report warns that on current trends road traffic accidents could outstrip stroke and HIV as one of the main causes of preventable deaths by 2020...third only to heart disease and depression." 1

"[Cars have an] enormous toll in respitory and heart disease, cancers, congestion, rage, noise, loss of green space and social cohesion" 2

"climate change went from being a risky hypothesis to something that is now, according to the WHO, killing 150,000 of us globally every year...road transport accounts for over a fifth of CO2 emissions" 2

Car's don't give you freedom, they take it away. They're a restiction on movement, and a financial ball and chain for many.

Globalisation

Should we fear monopoly and not the size or a company?

If properly regulated, trade provides poor economies with a means of achieving growth, thereby supporting sustainable development. However allowing market forces to dominate an economy has serious negative consequences for sustainability. Free market competition results in – some would say relies on - over-production and over-consumption. It widens the gap between rich and poor; and poverty, injustice and excess wealth are all bad for the environment. And it obscures the big picture, since market prices do not reflect environmental damage or long-term supply. - Naomi Emmerson

"The growing US deficit has, since the 1960's been the dominant driving force behind financial globalisation." 1

"The accumulated external debt of the world's richest country the United States of America, is equal to $2.2 trillion. This is almost the exact amount owed by the rest of the developing world, including India, China and Brazil - $2.5 trillion." 1

"While many castigate companies like McDonalds and Nike ... at least they can claim to be producing actual goods...banks and financial institutions are making money in the most unproductive way; by lending gambilng and speculating...[they] make money from money." 1

Government of philosophers.

Abolish elections select people at random.

Is religon the best practical joke ever - to be done.

Religons aren't about proving of disproving whether there is a god or not, but about faith.

All religons contain wisdom.

The problem with all religous texts from a single religon is that they contradict each other and that they are open to interpretation.

Heaven isn't a democracy.

Religons bring people together and give a sense of community.

"Religions greatest service over the centuries has been to deliver explanations for the inexplicable. But this function has survived too long. Today it does much more to prevent humanity from gaining knowledge." - Andrian Kreye

"Disastrous Christian notion that humankind was given "domination" over nature, to exploit and abuse as it found convienient." - Mark Lynas

If god is omnipotent where does evil come from?

If we thank god for good we must thank him for evil too.

Demonisation of the opposition. The Devil is in the church. This is seen through the split between the Catholics and the Protestants. If you are a Catholic then protestants have been tricked by the devil.

In schools religon should be taught as part of history.

The whole point of religon is it's implausable. Otherwise you wouldn't need faith.

"For a religon that belives in eternal life, the phrase 'till death do us part' seems a little strange." - radio 4

What is teh purpose of gods life?

If god knows everything the future is pre-determined. If this is so then there is no free will.

It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God....but with God all things are possible.
