"If we are serious about equality of opportunity, he contends, we need to be serious about eradicating, all the influences that social class, race and family background have on life chances...Taking equality of opportunity seriously actually invloves keeping outcomes within a narrow range...In policy terms this would entail a huge expansio of schemes such as Sure Start...childcare...education...public health initiatives...food...capital grants to young people and a universal basic income." 1
